Carboniferous stratigraphy



The diagram below illustrates the Carboniferous stratigraphy of the Glasgow area. The rocks are divided into five Groups, each of which is further divided into Formations. Some 3000 metres of sediment are present in the area.

The sedimentary rocks outcropping at the Fossil Grove belong to the Limestone Coal Formation of the Clackmannan Group.
